Staying in Touch With Your Inner Child
The person you are right now is primarily based on your childhood. How you were brought up, your caretakers, and what you learned all combine to make you who you are today. Even if we don’t realize it, childhood experiences inform our decisions and actions.
As adults, we’re inherently taught to let go of the once carefree kiddos we used to be. I’m challenging that. I think it’s ok to be silly and goof off sometimes. Here’s why.
What Is Your Inner Child?
Your “inner child” is a subconscious piece of you. I like to think of it as a reminder of who we once were before the trials and tribulations of adult life took over. Money, work, and relationships often overshadow this small part of our being. Even if you don’t feel connected to your inner child, it’s always there.
Why Is Staying In Touch With Your Inner Child Important?
Every day we deal with issues, whether it’s a problem at work, an argument with a spouse, or forgetting to pay the water bill on time.
While it may seem counterintuitive to do something “childish” in the midst of our busy lives, tapping into your inner child can help you:
- Heal repressed emotions you experienced growing up.
- Boost your self-esteem and show yourself self-love.
- Incorporate self-care into your day-to-day life.
- Tap into your fun, creative and playful side.
3 Ways To Reconnect With Your Inner Child
Here are a few examples of ways to stay in touch with that little person you used to be.
- Treat Yourself to Something Fun
This could be jumping on a trampoline, baking a cake, or getting an ice cream cone the size of your head. Think about something that brings you joy and go for it, whether it’s sweet, silly, or messy.
- Spend Time With Kids
Do you have nieces and nephews? Do your friends have young kids? Perhaps you’re a parent yourself. Nothing will help you stay in touch with your inner child, quite like spending a few hours playing with a young kid. So next time someone needs a babysitter, volunteer!
- Try Arts & Crafts
Even if you don’t have an artistic bone in your body, something about getting messy with paints sparks a unique type of delight. It’s ok to be goofy and messy every once in a while. These are just a few ways you can speak to your inner child. You could also plan a sleepover with your girlfriends, dance around the house, or do anything else that allows you to feel carefree.
